His gaze against the sweeping of the bars has grown so weary, it can hold no more. To him, there seem to be a thousand bars, and behind the bars, no world. Der weiche Gang geschmeidig starker Schritte, der sich im allerkleinsten Kreise dreht, ist wie ein Tanz von Kraft um eine Mitte, in der betäubt ein großer Wille steht. As he paces in cramped circles, over and over, the movement of his powerful soft strides is like a ritual dance around a center in which a mighty will stands paralyzed. Nur manchmal schiebt der Vorhang der Pupille sich lautlos auf –. Dann geht ein Bild hinein, geht durch der Glieder angespannte Stille – und hört im Herzen auf zu sein. Only at times, the curtains of his pupils lift quietly--. An image enters in, rushes through the tense stillness of the limbs, plunges into the heart and is gone. Heart, and is gone. Heart, and is gone.

(from Man Jiang Hong, or "Whole River Red" attributed to Song dynasty general Yue Fei.) nù fà chōng guān, píng lán chù, xiāo xiāo yǔ xiē. My wrath bristles through my helmet, the rain stops as I stand by the rail; tái wàng yǎn, yǎng tiān cháng xiào, zhuàng huái jī liè. I look up towards the sky and let loose a passionate roar. sān shí gōng míng chén yǔ tǔ, bā qiān lǐ lù yún hé yuè. At the age of thirty, my deeds are nothing but dust, my journey has taken me over eight thousand li. mò děng xián bái liǎo shào nián tóu, kōng bēi qiè. So do not sit by idly, for young men will grow old in regret. Jìng kāng chǐ, yóu wèi xuě; chén zǐ hèn, hé shí miè? The humiliation still lingers. When will the pain of an evil emperor's subjects ever end? jià cháng jū tà pò Hè lán shān què! Let us ride our chariots through the Helan Pass. zhuàng zhì jī cān hú lǔ ròu, xiào tán kě yǐn xiōng nú xuè. There we shall feast on barbarian flesh and drink their blood. daì cóng tóu shōu shí jiù shān hé, cháo tiān què. Let us begin anew to recover our empire, before paying tribute to a good emperor.

about

Temple of the Atheist Mantis was created (along with VOCA TERRA), as one of a pair of concept albums, which, together, tell the story of a planes-walking hunter god/Orion figure who, upon discovering a shamanistic necklace with 32 animal totems, travels time & space in order to purify the various locas/spirit-realms as he searches for his stolen wife, a ghost-lion who lives in the sun.

In the context of Temple of the Atheist Mantis, our hero sails a viking longboat to hell, meets himself as a panther in a cage (with direction from the queen of dakinis, [a flail-wielding feline bitch; at once his greatest friend/enemy/lover]), and afterwards discovers fellowship in Lakota-Sioux allies. He then docks at Lotus Island to meet the Green Maid with her retinue of saviouress females, eventually wanders the bardo of death while talking to nature's animal priests, and ultimately drives peacock chariots through the Amazon rain-forest with a long dead Chinese general from the 12th century. Then, as before, he sails into the sunset to make war on the enemies of human progress.

For our hero's exploits in the context of VOCA TERRA (Sounds of the Miles), please see the description for that album. We hope you enjoy our adventures.
